This flat, rounded Japanese gouge is derived from a flat knife whose edge is sharpened into a convex shape , often called hamaguri , which means a gentle and natural curve.
This geometry helps to reduce tear-out at the edges , offering a cleaner and more stable cut than that of a classic flat knife.
By using the tool with the back face up and making a controlled scraping motion, it is possible to obtain very shallow traces , close to the rendering of a very shallow gouge.
This type of finish is particularly appreciated for preserving a vibrant texture on the surface of the wood.
This gouge is traditionally used for Kamakura style carving , but it is also suitable for all visible finishes requiring smoothness and regularity.
The blade is made of HSS steel , ensuring excellent cutting performance and good wear resistance.
