This curved, four-sided Japanese plane, called Shihou-Sori Kanna , is made by Hon-Nagakuni , a specialist in traditional fine woodworking tools. Its unique shape features a curve in all four directions, making it ideal for working on complex, concave, convex, or multi-directional surfaces. This type of plane is highly valued for shaping organic forms and precisely sculpting volumes.
The blade is forged from Blue Steel #1 , a premium Japanese steel renowned for its exceptional sharpness, robustness, and superior edge retention. The plane's body is made of Japanese white oak, a dense and stable wood that perfectly transmits cutting force while offering a comfortable grip. Like all traditional, handcrafted planes, it is not ready to use and requires initial sharpening and adjustment of the wood for optimal performance.
Each size corresponds to a specific use: smaller widths are suitable for precision work, while larger widths allow for shaping large curves or rounded surfaces. Minor variations between tools are normal, as each plane is handcrafted. This ensures a unique tool capable of great finesse in wood carving.
