This "Meikoma" shogi set is made of Mikurajima boxwood , the most prestigious wood used for the traditional manufacture of shogi pieces. The Ryōko writing style, one of the four major classical styles, is distinguished by its elegance, balance, and legibility.

The pieces are made by the craftsman Seigetsu in Tendō (Yamagata Prefecture) , a region recognized worldwide as the heart of shogi craftsmanship in Japan.
